"3" LIST # 2 - Top 3 Dj Muggs joints ! (By guest contributor Will Line)

When Visual asked me to contribute to his blog, I was feeling his concept for the "Top/Best of 3". At the same time it makes it difficult when you consider producers like DJ Muggs, who has created such an insane catalog of beats that I would be defeated if I thought too hard about what his top 3 beats are...however I will still make the attempt.
I was first introduced to Cypress Hill in 92 when I purchased the "JUICE" movie soundtrack (on cassette) and featured on it was "How I could just kill a man" and the hard to find "Shoot Em Up". Both tracks demolished my notion of music being in Jr. High and having a stronger history with metal. Then when the first House of Pain dropped I was going crazy to that whole thing, and likewise when Black Sunday came out and I went back to pick up the first Cypress LP as well. His beats were murky, swampy, and haunting....what you need in your catalog when the apocalypse hits and its ski mask and machete time.
Sixteen plus years later as a grown man I am sitting in my room in Logan Square with the windows open listening to the fading summer rain as dusk settles in and letting this Muggs playlist I put together soak in and define the ambience.
As I previously mention, with such an extensive arsenal of shredders its hard to cull it down to three, but these are three that I think everyone should know about....the Will Line presents Muggs Trinity
1) MC Eiht & Cypress Hill "Prelude to a come up"

2) House of Pain "Shamrocks and Shennanigans"
When this came out it was crazy to me that Muggs could do this kind of lighthearted beat considering his work on Black Sunday which was a much darker project. When I was in high school House of Pain was poppin and they represented white doods who were not over the top cornballs and me being of partial Irish descent I was feeling that angle. Muggs incorporated a lot of horns and bagpipe samples into this album giving it its own trademark sound as a stand alone product that was different than the latin influenced sound of Cypress Hill. This was one of my favorite songs off of that album and is good party music.

3)Kool G Rap "Real Life"

This is one of those tracks that qualifies as an anthem...it had such a melancholy aura coupled with G Rap who drops a fucking blizzard of brutality on here. This represents the era that we are living in perfectly...it reeks of alienation and grime. Definately one of those "I'll have another shot and keep em comin" type tracks. Muggs and G Rap should consider doing an entire project together.
